Sicilian Dragon: The Ultimate Guide with GM Simon Williams

Killer Dragon With Gm Simon Williams (vol 1 & 2)

The Killer Dragon – GM Simon Williams

The Sicilian Dragon is considered one of the sharpest openings in chess.

The Dragon has become extremely popular over the last 4 decades as countless Grandmasters have employed this dangerous opening at the top levels.

The chess DVD ¨Killer Sicilian Dragon¨ features over 12 hours of action-packed content by a leading expert in the Sicilian Dragon – Grandmaster Simon Williams!

The first DVD in this two-volume series focuses primarily on the critical lines of the Dragon Variation with a special focus on the ultra-sharp Yugoslav Attack.

GM Simon Williams also provides alternative lines for those players who prefer to shy away from the mountains of complicated theory associated with this opening.

In Volume 2, GM Williams analyzes a very interesting opening that has only burst on the scene in recent years – the Dragadorf!

This sick invention of an opening combines ideas from two of the most popular chess openings ever played – the Dragon and the Najdorf.

This massive 12 hour DVD set on the Sicilian Dragon sets the gold standard for analysis of this popular opening. GM Williams does a masterful job taking the Black player through all the complicated lines of the Dragon with his witty and mesmerizing delivery. In addition, he introduces the “Dragondorf” variation which will surely catch your 1.e4 opponents off guard. Highly recommended.

I’ve won many games thanks to this video. I liked the dragodorf ideas to surprise my opponents. A mix between the Najdorf (…,a6) and Dragon (…,g6).

First of all this is a huge DVD. And I mean it. You get the Dragon and a Najdorf Dragon Hybrid called the Draggadorf. The Dragon on its own is a really huge topic where you can spend years and years, same with the Najdorf.
What surprised me the most in comparison with the other opening DVD´s I´ve watched is, that he devotes a lot of time and energy on Concepts. The whole first part of the first DVD is almost entirely Concepts. And this is really really good as for someone who has no knowledge of an opening it gives you a guideline despite not knowing theory. You could play these positions and have a general understanding of what to play. One of the Concepts he discusses in detail is e.g. the exchange sacrifice on c3 which is a common motif in the Sicilian. The rest of the first DVD is dedicated towards the Yugoslav Attack probably the main weapon of white and the most critical. The Second DVD features the rest of the Dragon theory and the Draggadorf. The Presentation is outstanding. He gives a lot of games and follows only then up with the necessary Theory. But still the Dragon is a huge opening complex and gets confusing quickly. Simon Williams does an excellent job of giving you everything you need in the Main-Line Dragon. The Anti-Sicilians are unfortunately missing as you will encounter in a lot of games nowadays the Rossolimo with Bb5. I do not blame or can judge the DVD on this Factor as it delivers on what it promises: a Killer Dragon. I would as the theory always develops around the Sicilian do additional research to see if the theory holds still strong today.
But for everyone determined to learn the Dragon this is a great start and you will be able to play it and win some nice games if you put in the required work and follow the lines he gives.
