Empire Chess Volume 32

GM Alex IpatovThe positional sacrifice is one of the hardest concepts to learn in chess because it requires a profound understanding of the game. Many beginner and intermediate players vastly overemphasize the importance of material in chess, failing to utilize the massive benefits that a positional sacrifice can bring. To employ a strong positional sacrifice you have to firmly trust your chess convictions and know that sometimes positional factors such as the initiative, a space advantage, centralization, or better coordination can overcome an advantage in material. Also when you play a positional sacrifice, you will be much better prepared for the ensuing radical changes in the game as your opponent will be knocked off balance by the change in course.

As a rule, so-called “positional” sacrifices are considered more difficult, and therefore more praise-worthy, than those which are based exclusively on an exact calculation of tactical possibilities¨ – Alexander Alekhine

When you sacrifice material, you usually are doing so to immediately checkmate the enemy king or win even more material. This DVD covers the so-called Positional Sacrifice where material is surrendered in order to gain a strong positional advantage. These sacrifices do not lead to immediate mate but rather improve the position of the existing pieces or constrict the opponents position until they are forced to resign. I know of no other DVD which devoted solely to this theme. GM Ipatov uses examples from his own games to show the viewer the situations in which these type of sacrifices are viable. This DVD is more geared to the advanced player and is highly recommended.

for the advanced player a recommendable DVD – its so often that a positional sac turns the tables in a dry drawish position, when suddenly after sacing a pawn all of your pieces spring to life – or you are in a position with a slight advantage but no way to crush through directly. Definitely something you have to master sooner or later to get a good player

Since I started to study chess I never saw a material devoted to the sacrifices, and I find these situations really interesting to develop a element of surprise against my opponent. Thank you for this DVD.
