This Full Ginger collection is full of great strategic lessons. The way the grand masters express their tactics including examples from their own games, pointing out their mistakes and reviewing the right moves really helps out.

GM Simon Williams is very clear with his explanations. His opening dvds were very useful for me, an amateur player of about 1900

I bought the GingerGM DVD’s and have to be honest: although I am a low-rated player, I did learn a lot of Simon Williams. He learned me to have another look at the chess game. He does this in a very clear manner, and provides several examples of games that were won or lost by him. Very clear and I would advise this to everybody.

9 out of 10! A fantastic course and well-priced! This course is a compilation of chess videos presented by the engaging GM Simon Williams and other British Grandmasters such as Nick Pert, Gawain Jones, Danny Gormally and IM Sam Collins primarily on openings and endgames. There are also 2 videos from Russian GM Ivan Sokoloff on positional themes. The quality of the videos are very high in terms of depth of instruction, presentation and good audio/visual values. The videos feature a split screen with a board on the left and the presenter on the right. The moves are not shown in writing, but it is easy for the viewer to follow along. What I like best about the videos are the presenters themselves. The do not mumble or speak in a monotone voice. They pace the course at a good speed and I find it easier to follow a chess lesson if the presenter speaks in a British or American style accent. Unfortunately, the videos do not come with extras such as PGN’s of the games, written summaries or puzzles to cement the knowledge. Therefore, the viewer has to be a voracious note taker, play along with a chess board or watch the videos several times. Also, I do not like that the chapters are not descriptive in most cases, just numbered. To be able to pick up easily where I left off or find a particular topic fast, I created my own hand written index. This is time consuming and I wish the producers had thought of this. My favourite videos were Killer Endgames by Nick Pert, Sokolov Explains: Middlegame Pawn Structures, Sokolov’s Secrets of Positional Sacrifices and finally, Play Like Tal by GM Simon Williams. Killer Endgames is for players under 1100 to over 2200 rating. The lessons are grouped into 4 parts, under 1000, 1000-1400, 1400-1800 and 1800-2200. This is a great concept as it enables the viewer to see their understanding increase. Also, the viewer can just choose lessons at a certain level if preferred. My understanding of chess seemed to take a giant step forward after viewing the two Sokoloff videos. This is a huge bonus psychologically. Both of the Sokoloff videos feature moves that transform the pawn structure and how the player was able to win the game as a result. Also, Secrets of Positional Sacrifices included PGN’s of the games. Play Like Tal is a unique video in that it is interactive. At key moments, the super enthusiastic GM Williams asks you the viewer to pick the best move from 3 options and then using your computer mouse, the viewer gets to see how their choice compared to Tal’s move. This isn’t just a gimmick. I found this interactive method better for analyzing and remembering key ideas compared to conventional chess video. I was so impressed with Play Like Tal, I wish they were all like this.

Let me begin by saying that it is hard NOT to like Simon Williams! He will pull you in with his down to earth winsome personality. His engaging style coupled with his unbeatable material will have you captivated while you continually learn and improve. I found myself rooting for “Harry the H Pawn” right along with Simon! Simon Williams does not present material for the faint of heart. As he says, “If you want that, then go get yourself a Berlin video!” He will turn you into an attacking player like no other. Truly, he revolutionized my chess. I find myself eagerly seeking that “Crash, bang, wallup!!” that Simon so aptly prepares you for. Undoubtedly my chess rating has gone up since studying the Ginger GM’s courses. I have beaten opponents three and four hundred points higher than my rating. People notice me in the club where I play. Some are even asking what is making the difference. The only drawback I can see is, if everybody gets Simon’s material, what am I going to do? Everyone’s game will go up! 😉

Simon William’s Killer Series is one of the best values on the market. His presentations are polished and the presenters are solid pros. My favorites are the Killer Grand Prix, Killer C3 Alapin, and Killer D4. The last is by Simon himself. These lessons are Simon at his best. The Anti Meran Gambit, Anti Moscow Gambit, and Botvinik Slav are favorite. Simon goes all in for the attack. The lines are solid and he reviews the material to help you digest what are some complicated lines and ideas.

Ivan Solokov and Danny Gormally also have excellent videos.

I would like to see David Howell create a Killer DVD.

    Thanks Simon!

This is a great set of DVDs that allows an intermediate player such as myself to really learn concepts without getting to mired in theory. As Simon stresses in many of the videos, this instruction is great for those of us that have tons of study time but still want to develop our skills. The presentations are all very straightforward. For those that need theory, that is also accommodated in their own separate sections. A great set of instructional tools! Thank you
