This Master Method is a great kit for those who do not have much time to spend practicing chess on a daily basis. In this course, GM Simon Williams provides the building blocks to strengthening one’s game. I find his tips very useful for tournament preparation. However, as Simon suggests, one truly needs to spend some time studying and analyzing his/ her own style of play after watching videos in the Master Method 1 series; imitating Simon’s style of play might not your style. All in all, a good product to purchase if you wish to perform better in tournaments without spending much time practicing on a daily basis.

I learned Ginger GM from his videos on YouTube. I love his style. it is very instructive and entertaining. that is why I bought this series. I used the openings and middle game he recommended and found out i got improved very quickly. probably 200-300 points, to 1500, in a couple of months. I have watched the videos two times and plan to watch again. everything i learned something new. of course, his videos focus on specific way, you may need to get more videos from someone else on certain topics in a broad way, such as positional middle game.

GM Simon Williams is one of the best lecturers in the chess world. He mixes terrific knowledge of the game with his wit and humor which makes watching his videos quite entertaining. If you are more of a positional player, then these videos are probably not for you as GM Williams stresses a Tal-like attacking style guaranteed to bring home the full point in dramatic fashion. Many of his topics are not discussed anywhere else so much of the material is truly original. Get both courses and watch your rating soar!

Simon William’s first master method is an excellent comprehensive course on all aspects of the game. The first set of videos discuss how to pick an opening for the player of the white pieces and also the black pieces. Simon doesn’t necessarily give specific opening recommendations but stresses the importance of picking opening that suit your personality. He also discusses the middle game. How to learn the correct plans in the middle game and covers positional and tactical play. He also gives great ideas on when to trade pieces and maneuvering to improve piece placement. He covers how to launch an attack and efficient calculation with a lot of interactive practice. One of the best parts of the class is the covering of essential endgames. A highly recommended master class.

These are two very distinct courses and I would suggest getting very clear on what you want to learn. The Ginger GM 01 course helps you with the basic skills you need to become a better chess player with minimal study time.

I think many people have the mistaken idea that GM Simon Williams is only an opening specialist. His presentations of openings is very good. I’d say perfect if I wasn’t struggling with his suggestion in the second course. I’m pretty certain there is something I am missing but after watching the videos a couple of time what it is still escapes me. To these misguided people I would say you haven’t watched his Master Method courses. His advice on active defense, tactics and pattern recognition are extremely helpful and like the Anna Rudolf Course are a great foundation.

The Ginger GM Method 02 is all about revolutionizing your chess. I would suggest if you get a good offer on both courses to learn the openings suggested in this course and then go through the other chapters in the 01 course. This applies to attacking players. Positional or less reckless players can simply stick with the openings they choose in the first course. My reason for suggesting this backward approach is because GM Simon Williams is right saying you ought to stick with an opening for years. Unless you plan on letting the second course sit on the shelf for a couple of years why not try this suggested attacking repertoire.

There is much more to the second course than only the opening. The discussion on isolated queen pawns, calculations and premature attacks alone are worth the price of the course even if you come back later to the more attacking opening repertoire.
The Ginger GM courses remind me a lot of the Anna Rudolf Course. I’d say if you prefer a more solid, less risky way of playing to start with her course. I like attacking and have no trouble finding absurd moves. I find it easier to see the crazier moves than the safe, solid moves. No one course is going to give you everything you need. I use a blend of the knowledge I have gained from several Master Method Courses.

Your play will improve significantly if you devote yourself to applying what you learn from the Ginger GM. I feel good knowing I can play a solid game of chess and don’t mind putting in more work. When I study courses for advanced players I try to see how what I have learned from the Ginger GM fits in with the new stuff. These courses have become my compass. Something I trust to guide me through a chess game.

This was the first master method I got, mainly because I love Simon’s videos and personality. The main benefit of these videos is how easy to digest the ideas are, and how fun Simon makes learning. I wouldn’t say the videos are thorough enough for a expert level player looking for concrete ideas. But these videos are perfect for a lower level player looking to jump 100-200 points. His ideas on active defense and pattern recognition are the foundation of any good chess players knowledge base. This is a great master method to start with if you haven’t watched any yet. Though if you love Simon’s youtube channel then you’ll love this master method.

I was really pleased with my purchase of this master method series by GM Simon Williams. The Ginger GM is always fun to listen to and the first series seems geared toward a player who is trying to find out his/her style and what they can do to get the most enjoyment out of chess. Simon is an aggressive attacking style of play, but offers options for other types of players as well. He sets the table for a viewer to do more research once they consider which playing style they like the most. He also provides tips on studying and analyzing positions.

The second part goes into more details preparing the viewing with some nice openings for black and white. He also goes into deeper details about analyzing where you’re at in a game, how to make better decisions, pattern recognition and finish off your opponent. He takes a look at a number of games from the past and has an entertaining way of describing the action on the board.

I’ve been taking my time going through this series and it has been a real treat to give myself an hour or two to go through a lesson and try to apply it to a game. I think the Ginger GM will make you a better player and also increase your enjoyment of the game. I think GM Simon Williams’ passion for chess comes through in these video lessons. I think most people will come away with more knowledge and motivation to play the game after watching these instructional videos.
