How many games have you won or lost due to tactics? Think about how many decisive victories have come by attentively picking off an opponent’s loose piece via a combination. Of course, every chess player loves tactics and in this DVD there is no shortage of exciting over-the-board combinations. GM Rafael Leitão begins by explaining how to develop your tactical awareness. He then shows us a myriad of exciting combinations. He explains the position before inviting the viewer to try and find the winning sequence of moves. After the completion of the combination, he explains what nuances the viewer should have spotted during his thinking process which led him to make the winning move. This one should be watched over and over many times. My only minor quibble is that I wish a Chessbase database of the games were included for reference.

Great job again by Rafael Leitao! Before this video I was stuck at the same rating because I kept winning games regularly, but then in some games I just lost or drew a won game because I couldn’t spot the tactic. In this video series, you will learn about combinational themes and tactics from Rafael Leitao. The first step that Rafael goes over in combinational vision, which is the basis of all tactics. For example (my own example), is it easier to spot a skewer if you know what a skewer is? The answer is yes because you know what you are looking for. You can learn to improve your combinational vision due to solving and understanding many tactics. This video series has improved my view on how important tactics are.
