The Dutch Defense: The Ultimate Guide with GM Simon Williams

The Killer Dutch With Gm Simon Williams

The Killer Dutch by GM Simon Williams

The Classical Dutch Defense is a fantastic defense system against 1. d4 that is guaranteed to catch your opponent by surprise.

The main lines of the Dutch Defense include the Leningrad Dutch with an early kingside fianchetto, and the Dutch Stonewall Defense with a closed center and pawns on f5, e6, and d5.

However, in the Classical Dutch Defense, Black strives to rapidly challenge White for control of the center with moves like f5, e6, and later d6 and e5 – building a dynamic pawn wall that puts strong pressure on white.

Grandmaster Simon Williams is the world’s leading expert on the Classical Dutch Defense, and the British GM is certainly not shy about sharing his secrets in this premium 6 hour DVD.

He analyzes victories and defeats in the Classical Dutch so that the viewer understands the keys to success and how to avoid common positional and tactical pitfalls.

I never considered to play the dutch against d4 – after this DVD – lets give it a try! The teaching style of Simon Williams is definitely unparalleled – funny, energetic and perfectly didactic – a must for any dutch player

Great DVD!! The format was kindof interesting. It was divided into 58 different tiny sections. I think it would’ve been nice to have had it in several larger sections, but I suppose all GingerGM DVD’s are this way. As for the material covered, he covered pretty much every single possible line. Even 1. d4 f5 2. g4!?

So if you’re looking for a cheap way to learn the Dutch or just looking to find anew defense to d4 it is definitely worth it!

World-renowed Dutch expert GM Simon Williams does an outstanding job explaining his pet defence against 1.d4. His entertaining style makes this DVD not only informative but fun to watch. He thoroughly explains the the main ideas behind the Classical Dutch so as to cut down the memorization of the many lines Black may encounter.

I was looking for a system against the English opening and the Dutsch defence is an excellent alternative to the king’s Indian defence. I used to play the King’s Indian with Nc6 and a6 but it requires to learn a lot of theory. Moreover, if you play the grand prix attack (like me) for white you can play it for black as well using the dutch! Same features are repeated. Great job by Simon Williams as always.

The only variation that is less discussed in the DVD the Leningrad variation

A nice read but there is a line in the modern line that needs more attention. 8Qd3needs more analysis.White wins a pawn and Black has to fight for every to draw I think. So 8.Qd3 Nxc3 9.bxc3 Nc6 10.e4 e5 and is Black equal as Simon Claims -maybe not. 11.Re1 f4 (best – note 11…a5 transposes into a very bad line for Black p97 as discussed earlier in the book) 12.dxe5! fxg3 13.Qd5 Rf7 14.hxg3 Nxe5 15.Nxe5 dxe5 16.Qxe5 and White is a pawn ahead. White is better and perhaps Black can draw with best play but in practice Black gets no attack just hours of pain.Enough for me not to play the Classical.Be warned.

This course is for everyone who wants to have a nearly winning repertoire against 1.d4 .GingerGm makes it very interesting and easy to learn the ideas behind the opening.Players of strength 1600 to 2100 would be most benefited from this course.Earlier i used to fear playing against 1.d4 and everytime it appeared in my game i used to feel very nervous and upset and i was never able to play with full potential and got defeated all the time but thanks to GingerGm to release this DVD .And now after watching this DVD whenever i am black and 1.d4 occurs in my game i automatically feel very confident and start thinking that i would win the game even before the first ten moves are played and it acts as a headstart. My thanks to GingerGm for publishing this amazing DVD.

I been using Classical Dutch as my alternate opening repertoire. So if 1.e4 then e6 so I play my main line with French, but if 1.d4 then e6, to play Classical Dutch or QGD. I usually do not play 1.e4 followed by an instant f5 to avoid gambit lines. The defensive setup is easy to build and easy to play. I am playing Dutch for more than a year so when I see this DVD course on the Classical Dutch Defense, I give it a try to examine what GM Williams can contribute. I’m a bit of surprise to learn new things about this.

I know that GM Simon Williams is one of the world’s leading experts on the Classical Dutch Defense, so that is good when he shared his secrets in this 6-hour DVD. He teaches how Black strives to rapidly challenge White for control of the center with moves like f5, e6, and later d6 and e5 – building a dynamic pawn wall that puts strong pressure on white. Also, he showed the key ideas that need to remind yourself during the game. Understanding of the position and pawn structures are the keys to attain this, and GM Williams showed how to do this in his DVD.

There are examples of victories and defeats in the Classical Dutch so that the viewer will understand the keys to success and how to avoid common positional and tactical pitfalls. There are also some critical lines that you should work out and do your homework before you should use this opening in the actual tournament play. You should really familiarize yourself on these.

Final verdict: GM Williams speaks very motivational and a good commentator. He explains very well in a highly entertaining manner. His expertise in the Classical Dutch Defense is unquestionable. This is a must for a serious-tournament player who plays Classical Dutch (and French Defense as GM Williams also expert on this, such variation as 1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 or 1.d4 d5 2.e4 (trying to gambit) but e6! transposed to French, of course if 1.d4 e6 2.c4 then f5 to play Classical Dutch). Overall, this is one of the best lectures on Classical Dutch!!

First of all, I have to say, as someone who is becoming more and more addicted to chess videos, Simon Williams is tops! He is undoubtedly one of my favorite presenters. He is not at all boring and his enthusiasm is contagious. Simon is not just all talk. He puts his money where his mouth is. Putting his reputation on the line, he actually plays the openings that he presents. A younger Simon Williams unloads decades of experience spoon fed in a way that any novice can learn. Studying under Simon Williams, you will find the best lines given, explained in a way that is meant for you to get it. Get it and you will dominate. I love his aggressive style. I am confident that the choice lines he has selected really are the tried, true and proven best lines to play. My only disappointment was seeing the unnecessary nudity of a lady dancing displayed during the intro to one of his videos where a chess boxing match was taking place. I happened to be watching in a library and was completely embarrassed. It would have been worse if one of my young daughter’s had seen me watching this. Too bad. That said, Simon William’s material is the best.

I got this video in the course of investigating openings for my Black repertoire that would be a bit off the beaten track, but with plenty of potential for strong attacking positions for Black. This hit the mark very nicely. The value for money of this DVD is also very high in terms of cost for 6.5hrs of GM training, and also for the quality of the teaching. The course is very comprehensive and covers pretty much anything you would want to know about how to play the Classical Dutch and White’s possible responses.

Simon is a great teacher with a very friendly, lively and fast-paced style. This is important because if you are going to invest the time to study this video properly, it needs to be kept interesting. There are some presenters out there who can bore the pants off you, and it makes it difficult to stick with the course. Simon is not like that.

The layout of the course is very good too. Simon illustrates the Dutch by playing through some illustrative games and then going into the theory of that particular variation in some detail. Further on in the DVD he takes a look at the middlegame structures that come from the Dutch and how Black can capitalise on them.

All in all, a great introduction and detailed course to the Dutch for the intermediate/advanced player.
