Crushing White With The Caro-Kann Defense GM Maxim Dlugy

Join World Champions Capablanca, Botvinnik, Petrosian and Karpov in making the Caro Kann defense your weapon of choice against 1.e4.

These chess legends knew that behind the quiet appearance of 1…c6 is a formidable system based on sound positional principles and containing hidden venom.

One of the secrets of the Caro-Kann is that Black has a clear plan of development and no weaknesses, meaning that any attempts by White to force an advantage will often be a mistake. Know how to exploit it and victory is yours!

Now you can learn an opening you can rely on for your entire career with GM Maxim Dlugy. Dlugy is one of the foremost experts on the Caro-Kann, having played it at the highest level for over 30 years and used it to beat 2750-2800 players like Vassily Ivanchuk, Teimour Radjabov, Gata Kamsky and Alexander Morozevich.

Over the course of nearly 3 hours, Dlugy reveals all the weaknesses in White’s position and exactly how to take advantage of them with in-depth analyses of 10 instructive games, including the wins over the 4 players mentioned above.

GM Maxim Dlugy

Maxim Dlugy is a chess International Grandmaster originally born in Moscow, USSR. He moved to the United States with his family in 1977. He was only an average player for his age until his strength exploded in the early 1980s.

Always a strong speed chess player, Dlugy was formerly ranked number one in the world by the World Blitz Chess Association.

Besides winning many international events, and being the highest rated junior player in the world from ages 15 to 20, he has represented the U.S. chess teams in international team competitions, including the Chess Olympiad and has written articles and chess books on many different chess themes, including his own autobiographical book – ‘Grandmaster Insides’.

Recently he has proven that his practical strength is still formidable by winning two back to back Grandmaster Charity Blitz Championships in May of 2017 and 2018, ahead of more than a dozen grandmasters.

I have a few problems with this DVD, although it had huge potential. The first thing is that I find it annoying, that throughout the DVD the lines are shown from the white side, despite being a DVD for Black. Again my issues with the summary pdf of the course stay the same, as in my review for the Opening Repertoire for White (Openings for Club Players) – IM Valeri Lilov:
“The summary could be used as a short reference sheet with 1 or 2 major variations, as I find myself often rewatching parts of videos where this would come in handy.”
The second thing is, that I have the feeling the material is rushed through. For the Nc3 Variation of the Advance Variation he takes 4 minutes. As this is a really complex battle where black needs to be very careful of the many tricks and traps this is in my opinion nearly not enough. He simply says after a long variation, “black is fine here”. And I feel as an average player without a real clue of how to play he position from there. He shows you the relevant variations and to those where he devotes more time to they are great. He knows his stuff and he has played the caro kann a number of times throughout his career. This is for players at a certain level, I´d guess 2100 +, as he simply expects a lot of background knowledge from you. There are a lot of complicated lines but he doesn’t want to give you the easy way but in his opinion the best variation for black under practical terms. The problem there is again the time he devotes, he generally shows you one or two lines in great detail but the rest is left out and only a few possibilities are shown. I really want to like this DVD but there are just these few flaws that I cannot overlook. What I really enjoyed was the Nd7 Karpov Variation in the Main Line. As this is only rarely covered in DVDs and books about the Caro Kann and I was glad to see it here. But again the problems are the same, its simply not for the average player. Please bring Maxim Dlugy back again for a bigger and better project. He can be an amazing teacher and there is so much potential for a comprehensive project with him in my opinion. If you are already a good player in the caro and want insight who has played it against the best, this DVD is for you. For the rest I d stay away unfortunately.

I really enjoyed watching Grand master Maxim Dlugys video on the Caro-Kann Defense. It was well presented and very informative. The games and analysis were of a high quality. He did not hesitate to point out how he or his opponent may have played better in key positions. He readily explained how things might have gone if other lines of play had been chosen. In those instances he supported his ideas by including side games where the players did play alternative moves. Even though he was very thorough and explained every important decision, his analysis was not overwhelming. In fact I fond it easy to follow. He did not dwell exclusivily on the opening, but went into full games to give the viewer a complete context of what to expect from games played with this opening. Now, no video is perfect. As mentioned in another review in some instances he goes a little to quickly. Also, some key popular lines are not discussed – The currently popular Fantasy variation for example. I would also have liked to see more Caro-Kann games analysed. Maybe it’s time for a Caro-Kann Deep Dive? As mentioned at the beginning I really enjoyed and learned from the material that was presented. I can readily recommend This video.
