The Polgar Method – Gm Susan Polgar’s Complete Course For Club Players

GM Susan Polgar

Susan Polgar is a FIDE Senior trainer and has coached some of the best players in the world.

Now you can benefit from Susan’s expertise with her brand new 10 volume training program, The Polgar Method.

Most players are let down by their weaknesses when it comes to advanced chess strategy.

The Polgar Method fixes that with a specific course on each aspect of chess.

First up is the opening. While this is probably the least important phase of the game until you’re over 2100 Elo, you still need to get to the middlegame with a decent position.

That’s why Susan gives you her recommended repertoire for anything you might face. A versatile opening with a ton of attacking potential as White; a counter-attacking response to 1.e4 and an aggressive line against 1.d4/c4/Nf3.

What You Will Learn in This Course

In line with Susan’s chess philosophy, each opening is broken down into strategic ideas and typical themes. No need to remember endless variations, just understand what you’re trying to achieve.

The most common opening traps are also covered – not the basic ones everyone knows about, but the more subtle tricks that can appear early on. Even GMs have fallen for these, so being familiar with them will save you from some embarrassing losses and help you catch a few people out.

The Lasker Trap in The Albin Counter-Gambit

Then, Susan looks at tactics. Again, the course assumes you know basic motifs such as forks and pins. What Susan does is expand on these to show you how these combinations appear in real situations. You’ll also learn sneaky ways to push your opponents into your tactical traps.

Next, Susan reveals how we can improve our advanced chess strategy by learning from the masters of positional chess.

Why was having a Queenside pawn majority enough for Capablanca to win games? How did Karpov dominate the key lines and squeeze Kasparov off the board? These positional methods will serve you well throughout your chess career.

Then you’ll learn the secrets of attacking the King, perhaps the most fun pursuit of chess. Susan breaks down the different plans of attack based on where the enemy King is: in the center, on the same side of the board as your King, or on the opposite side.

Each King position requires a specific approach. What to attack with, how quickly, how much you should sacrifice and why – Susan reveals all with instructive examples taken from grandmaster games.

Most club players never learn how to defend – a large part of the reason they don’t make great progress. Susan reveals how champions like Mikhail Botvinnik and Magnus Carlsen combine defense with counterplay, staying safe without handing their opponents the initiative.

Finally, Susan makes sure you always get rewarded for your hard work by converting the endgame into a win. Endgame Play will teach you how to hold a Rook endgame a pawn down, why not all opposite-colored Bishop endings are draws, and how to use the bridge-building technique to escape perpetual check and win the Lucena position.

Great course for club players, with Susan explaining the fundamental issues involved in each subject. Well worth the money (and increased ELO!).

This chess course is a must for club players (or even tournament players). Susan’s methods will skyrocket players chess knowledge. Really a complete course! This is the course I’ve always watch from time to time.

But I there is one thing I want to recommend to GM Susan is that when presenting playing with the Black repertoire, like French defense or King’s Indian defense, much better if the Black pieces is presented in the bottom of the board and not at the top so that the lectures will be easily grasp and appreciate by the player playing with the Black pieces. I have a hard time getting an actual board and rotate it.

The great thing about this bundle for me is the coverage of the London System. My initial interest was for that data, but I found the middlegame videos to be very helpful to my understanding of the game.

This is a great course for the intermediate player who wants to move their game to the next level. It does this by focussing in on a flexible opening for White, the London System, and responses for Black against 1.d4 with the King’s Indian Defence and 1.e4 with the French Defence. Susan goes into enough detail to get you familiar with the opening and give you something concrete to work with in your games rather than winging it. The openings taught are a good start to a working repertoire from which you can develop or move to other openings if you prefer. Having worked through the course I am now using all three openings in my repertoire, together with the Classical Dutch for 1.d4, courtesy of Simon Williams.

The other DVDs go into subjects such as tactics, positional play, attacking, opening traps, and endgames with lots of instruction that will help you gain the advantage once out of the opening stage.

I would class this course as excellent. Susan is a good chess coach, and among others, she has coached Ray Robson and Wesley So to success. Recommended.

This was my first purchase on The material is comprehensive providing straight forward and simple ways of all the major things you need to know to play chess – from basic opening recommendations for both white and black, attacking methods, defensive, and end game techniques. Good for both the lower and mid rated player looking for a systematic way to get an overview and methods for how to play as white and how to play as black exploring important middle game concepts and endgame techniques to enhance your pattern recognition and play for a win in different situations players will encounter as they play more and more over the board or online.

I’ve only watched the first CD, and it was very helpful. I’ve been playing badly for years and study didn’t seem to help. Ms. Polgar points out several small points that eventually make a substantial difference in the course of the game. What is obvious to a GM is not so obvious to a B player.

I am enjoying her lessons. Very easy to follow. I really like the way she goes over several options with each move and explains each with reasons for different moves.

I have problems with the point of view. If I’m supposed to learn to play French or KID, why am I looking at the game from the white perspecive? I would like to see it from the black players perspective.
