We recently asked iChess Club members which topics they’d like to see in these exclusive club videos. The winner of the poll was The Sicilian Najdorf, and so as promised, GM Damian Lemos now dives into this interesting chess opening! This is Part 2 of Damian Lemos’ exploration of the Sicilian Najdorf. If you haven’t seen it yet, go and watch Part 1 and then come back! You’ll understand this video much better if you’ve seen part 1 first.
The Sicilian Najdorf begins with the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6. (See the diagram)
Many players throughout history have sworn by the Sicilian Najdorf, including arguably the two greatest players of all time, both Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov (though Kasparov often transposed into a Scheveningen). The opening was named after Grandmaster Miguel Najdorf.
In more recent times, the opening has been relied on by players like Veselin Topalov and Vishy Anand.
The Sicilian Najdorf is very popular and has something for every kind of player, whether positional or tactical. It is quite aggressive and offers amazing flexibility. Black can often go for …e6 setups, …e5 setups, or even …g6 setups!. It is considered one of the best lines against 1.e4. On the flip side, it is one of the most complex openings out there, so you really need to know what you’re doing before you roll it out on the board!
In this exclusive iChess Club videos, GM Damian Lemos introduces you to this must-know opening, explaining the ideas behind it and teaching the must-know theory.
