The Reti Opening: Black's Early Bishop Development - Gm Bryan Smith (ichess Club)

Starting with 1.Nf3, the Reti Opening is actually not easy to define with a specific series of moves, as with other openings. It is an opening that can be reached through many move orders and transpositions. Essentially, it is an opening where White holds back the center pawns and strikes from the side, in hyper-modern fashion.

The definition GM Smith uses here is 1.Nf3, and then meeting Black’s ..d5 move (either now or within the next few moves) with a combination of a kingside fianchetto and the move c4, where White doesn’t play d4 (as that would transpose to a queen’s-pawn opening).

In this exclusive iChess Club video, the final of three parts, GM Smith continues building your basic Reti Repertoire for White, this time looking at lines when Black develops the bishop to g4 or f5 early and doesn’t accept the pawn sac on c4.
