The Sämisch Variation of the King’s Indian Defense begins with the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3. (See the diagram.)

This is the opening that gave Bobby Fischer problems – five of his losses were against this variation, and there came a time when he would avoid playing the King’s Indian Defense if he thought he would have to face this variation.
