Accelerated Dragon: Crush White With The Anti-Yugoslav Variation – GM Ron W. Henley (iChess.club)

Accelerated Dragon: Crush White With The Anti-yugoslav Variation - Gm Ron W. Henley (ichess.club)The Accelerated Dragon is a chess opening for Black against 1.e4, characterized by the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Bg7 (see the diagram to the right).

As the name suggests, the Accelerated Dragon differs from the standard Sicilian Defense Dragon variation by leaving out the d7-d6 move. Instead, Black gets to fianchetto his Dragon bishop and castle one move earlier.

In contrast to the “normal” Sicilian Defense Dragon Variation, Black avoids playing d7–d6, so that he can later play d7–d5 in one move if possible. The opening is pretty flexible, however, as Black still retains the option of reverting back to traditional Dragon lines by playing …d6.

The Accelerated Dragon: Crush White With The Anti-Yugoslav Variation

The Accelerated Dragon is is an opening for warriors, for players who want to go all out in battle, looking to take home the spoils. And there’s no better person to teach you how to emerge victorious than American GM Ron W. Henley.

GM Henley, aside from being a strong player in his own right, acted as second, analyst and trainer for former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov in many of his matches in the 1990s. Ron also trained 7-time US Women’s Champion, GM Irina Krush.

The great thing about the Accelerated Dragon is that Black sidesteps the Yugoslav Attack – one of the sharpest chess opening systems in the Sicilian Dragon.

Accelerated Dragon: Crush White With The Anti-yugoslav Variation - Gm Ron W. Henley (ichess.club)As GM Ron W. Henley explains in the video, after the moves 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 g6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Bg7 5. Nc3 Nc6 6. Be3 Nf6 7. f3 O-O 8. Qd2 (see the diagram on the right), for example, Black can immediately counter White’s attempt to castle queenside and go for a kingside attack – the dangerous Yugoslav Attack – with 8…d5! breaking open the center.

It is important to keep in mind that Black was able to play …d5 in one move as he did not play …d6 before, saving a tempo.
