Accelerated Dragon with 7.Nb3/7.Nxc6 (Anti-Yugoslav) – GM Ron Henley (iChess Club)

Accelerated Dragon With 7.nb3/7.nxc6 (anti-yugoslav) – Gm Ron Henley (ichess Club)The Accelerated Dragon is a chess opening for Black against 1.e4, characterized by the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Bg7 (see the diagram to the right).

As the name suggests, the Accelerated Dragon differs from the standard Sicilian Defense Dragon variation by leaving out the d7-d6 move. Instead, Black gets to fianchetto his Dragon bishop and castle one move earlier.

In contrast to the “normal” Sicilian Defense Dragon Variation, Black avoids playing d7–d6, so that he can later play d7–d5 in one move if possible. The opening is pretty flexible, however, as Black still retains the option of reverting back to traditional Dragon lines by playing …d6.

The Accelerated Dragon: 7.Nb3/7.Nxc6 The Anti-Yugoslav Variation

Accelerated Dragon With 7.nb3/7.nxc6 (anti-yugoslav) – Gm Ron Henley (ichess Club)The great thing about the Accelerated Dragon is that Black sidesteps the Yugoslav Attack – one of the sharpest chess opening systems in the Sicilian Dragon.

But white also has the opportunity to deviate first! GM Ron W. Henley covers a couple of possibilities in this video. While 7.Nb3 eliminates any tactical shots that may occur by way of Ng4 or Qb6, Black’s play proves strong in the center with a good set of resources and typical maneuvers that should be known by any Sicilian Dragon player!

The Accelerated Dragon is is an opening for warriors, for players who want to go all out in battle, looking to take home the spoils. And there’s no better person to teach you how to emerge victorious than American GM Ron W. Henley.

GM Henley, aside from being a strong player in his own right, acted as second, analyst and trainer for former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov in many of his matches in the 1990s. Ron also trained 7-time US Women’s Champion, GM Irina Krush.
