Kasparov CRUSHES Short – Insane Sacrifices Beat French Defense

Kasparov vs Short.jpg

Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short experienced a fierce rivalry at the pinnacle of elite chess in the 1990s.

Kasparov had recently fought off Anatoly Karpov’s persistent challenges for the title of World Chess Champion, only now to face a determined Nigel Short!

This chess video shows a great example of the rivalry between Kasparov and Short, as Kasparov always seemed to have an edge on the British Grandmaster with superior opening preparation and deeper positional play in the middlegame.

In this video, FIDE Master Will Stewart analyses a game between the two great players. In the game, Garry Kasparov played the opening accurately. Particularly of note is the excellent 11. h4 and 13. Rh3 maneuver, effectively combining a kingside attack with development and defense of the queenside and center.

Garry Kasparov went on to sacrifice two pawns to obtain a paralyzing bind on Nigel Short’s queenside, impeding development to such an extent that Short was entirely unable to generate meaningful counterplay, leading to black’s resignation in 32 moves!

Kasparov really needs no introduction. The legendary chess player dominated for over a decade. He became the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985 at age 22 by defeating then-champion Anatoly Karpov, and no one could take the crown from him until Kramnik in 2000.

Nigel Short became the first English player to play a World Chess Championship match, when he qualified to play Garry Kasparov in the World Chess Championship 1993 in London.
