Live Stream: Chess Endgame Lessons with IM Valeri Lilov [Sat 11 Aug, Noon EST]
The endgame can be a daunting aspect of chess. You’ve been playing for hours against a tough opponent, using all your energy and concentration along the way. You finally reach an endgame. You have a small advantage and it won’t be long before the end of the game. Whether you win or draw depends on how you conduct the next few moves.
In this free live stream, IM Valeri Lilov will arm you with practical skills you can apply in your endgames. These skills and tips will help you squeeze every last half-point from your endgames, and can be applied in general across any endgame positions you find yourself in.
You’ll see the type of positions you can encounter in real play. IM Lilov will show you how to think in the endgame; how to make progress in tricky positions and how to coordinate your pieces like a master. Truth is, many club players just don’t know how to formulate a plan in the final stages of a chess game, overwhelmed with all the open space, or forgetting the basic idea of actually trying to get active pieces and looking to checkmate the opponent’s king!
In this live stream, you will learn:
- How piece activity trumps material in the endgame.
- How to maximize the strength of your pieces and make them as active as possible – even at the cost of a little bit of material.
- How to come up with a plan in the endgame.
Another aspect about the endgame to keep in mind is that, usually, it is not wise to give up valuable pieces for a single pawn. Pawn grabbing should be avoided because activity outweighs material in most endgames.
You should also make sure to let all your pieces participate in the endgame and improve all your pieces as much as you can. Don’t play with only half your army!
Valeri covers these points, and more, along with practical examples, in the live stream. Tune in to hear his top tips for endgame understanding!
