Chess Techniques To Win – IM Valeri Lilov

Winning at chess can be simple if you follow a few basic strategies. You don’t need to have an extraordinary memory, calculate many moves ahead or have the same talent for the game like chess giants such as Garry Kasparov or Magnus Carlsen.

Simply relying on the basic rules of successful opening play will greatly improve your tournament results. Don’t overcomplicate your game! Control the center, develop your pieces actively, create threats and you will be winning games. You can use the control of the center to limit and push back the pieces of your opponent, or you can use this central control to establish strong outposts for your own pieces. In today’s video, IM Valeri Lilov focuses on some of the most important basic concepts for beginner chess playersChess Techniques To WIn

He shares some of his own online chess games with you and talks about his thoughts while playing.

The Key To Brilliancy In Fast – Chess Techniques To Win

This time, IM Lilov plays a 15 minute game with Black and shares his thoughts with us. The game starts 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. e5. This move is already a slight mistake. White ignores an important opening rule. He moves his e-pawn twice and forgets about his development. 3…Nc6 Black plays a normal developing move and attacks the pawn on e5. Black has already equalized in move 3.  4. exd6 exd6 5. d4 d5 6. dxc5 Bxc5. Black is already slightly better developed. Chess Techniques To WIn

7. Bb5 Nf6 (see the diagram on the right). Black plays a logical developing move here and prepares to castle. However, he could have already grabbed a pawn here by playing 7…Bxf2 8.Kxf2 Qb6+ and Black wins back his piece. This is a good example to illustrate that it is of paramount importance to quickly bring out your pieces in the opening. White lost time with the move 3.e5 and Black could have already punished him.

8. O-O O-O 9. Nc3 h6 (preventing White from playing 10. Bg5) 10. a3 Bg4 (see the diagram on the left). The pin on f3 gives Black more central control. The position is already easier to play for Black. IM Lilov only played logical moves, he did nothing spectacular and his position is already easier to play here. The concept of activity is a simple one of the simplest but most effective chess techniques to win a lot of games. Chess Techniques To WIn

11.h3 Bh5 12. Bxc6. This move only helps Black. Not only he gets the bishop pair in an open position but he also increases his central control by taking back on c6 with the b-pawn. Now, the pawn on d5 which was potentially weak, is safely protected.

12…bxc6 13. Qd3 Re8. Again, Black brings another piece into the game and increases his control over the e-file.Chess Techniques To WIn

14. b4 Bb6 15. Bb2 Qd6 (bringing the queen to a more active square) 16. Rfe1 Qg3! (see the diagram on the right).

Black uses the pin along the a7-g1 diagonal and poses some very concrete problems for White here.

17. Rxe8+ Rxe8 18. Rf1 – White has to defend passively here. 18…Ne4! – another strong move by IM Valeri Lilov, bringing one more piece into the attack. White collapses under the pressure. We plays 19. Nxe4 dxe4 (see the diagram on the left).

The game is basically over. Black’s attack is too strong. In the game, White played 20. Qd7 and Black could have simply won by going for 20…Bxf3! 21. Qxe8 Kh7 and White can’t do anything against the mate threatening on g2.

Remember the concept of activity in chess:

Develop your pieces towards the centre and place them on active squares. Only then try to regroup your pieces and always look for your worst piece. Moreover, try to restrict your opponent to build up a strong centre himself.
