Shirov Cooks Up Fresh Fried Liver

Every amateur should know the Fried Liver Attack. It’s one of the most fascinating and common openings in schoolboys/girls games. So, when a GM allows his fellow GM opponent to play it, it looks like a bad joke. Even worse if your opponent is one of the best tacticians in the world, GM Alexei Shirov!

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5, GM Sulskis played the surprising 5…Nxd5, allowing the powerful 6.Nxf7! (6.d4! is also interesting). After this theoretical sacrifice, White has a crushing attack as the Black King gets very exposed.

Fried LiverThe first critical position comes after Black’s 8th move (diagram). Here, Shirov could have played 9.Qe4, defending c2 and threatening 10.a3 (or even 10.d4). This would have given White a probably winning attack.

But Shirov couldn’t resist sacrificing the whole rook with 9.a3!?, and after 9…Nxc2+ 10.Kd1 Nxa1 11.Nxd5 Black’s position is very difficult to play!

If you want to see all the critical variations, with lots of sacrifices and spectacular combinations, then you should see the expert analysis of GM Larry Christiansen in this video lesson (a free preview of the Attacking Chess Mega Bundle).
