Elite Chess Tournament Schedule: 2012

It’s not easy to keep up with the constantly changing schedules, venues, player lists, etc. for the elite chess tournaments of 2012, so I decided to centralize my research here. The climate at the top of the chess world has become very interesting lately, as Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian have greatly distanced themselves from other super-grandmasters on the current ratings lists – Carlsen at #1 with 2835 FIDE and Aronian stubbornly chasing at #2 with 2825 FIDE – with the closest competitor Vladimir Kramnik almost 25 points back at #3 in the world with 2801 FIDE. The current World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand, has been fairly inactive as the champ is justifiably reluctant to expose his preparation. I believe we are going to see a new champion crowned in the near future, as the next generation of chess will be spearheaded by determined younger players like Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Teimour Radjabov, and Sergey Karjakin. To keep an eye on the world’s best players and events, here is my list of the most interesting tournaments that are confirmed for 2012.

This line-up guarantees to be a very exciting candidates tournament to determine the challenger for the next world chess championship, and I am very excited to see how Magnus Carlsen will perform in his first serious attempt towards the title of World Chess Champion.

I will continue updating this list and adding details about more events as they are confirmed throughout 2012.

UPDATE: Linares 2012 Cancelled Due To Scheduling Conflicts

Organizers have confirmed that Linares 2012 is cancelled, citing scheduling conflicts as the reason (adamantly declining that sponsorship/funding is the problem)
